NSPS Prize 2020: Call for Applications

On the quest to promote the study and research of Physical Science in Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences (NSPS) awards three prizes to recognize outstanding scholarly achievements in Physical Sciences. These prizes are:

  • 1. Ph.D. Thesis Prize
  • 2. Early Career Researcher Prize (NSPS Members Only)
  • 3. NSPS Prize for Exceptional Achievement in Research

All the prizes are based on application and the winner is selected by the Governing Council or the Executive Committee or External Committee jointly constituted by the Governing Council and the Executive Committee. The prize is awarded on the basis of outstanding scientific contribution for the benefit of humanity

Ph.D. Thesis Prize

Eligibility Criteria

  • 1. Candidate must not be a member of the Executive Committee or Governing Council of NSPS.
  • 2. The Ph.D. degree must have been awarded by a Nigerian University and most of the work carried in Nigeria.
  • 3. Award of the thesis by the Senate must have taken place within a calendar year before the award of the prize: e.g. degree awarded between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2019 is only eligible for the 2020 NSPS Ph.D. Thesis prize.
  • 4. The research work must fall within the Scope of Physical Sciences

Value of the Award

  • 1. Cash
  • 2. A letter from the NSPS President that recognizes the excellence of the achievements
  • 3. A plaque
  • 4. An offer of Regular Membership of the Society provided that the successful Candidate makes an application for membership within three (3) months of receiving notice of his/her Prize. Any successful candidate who is an existing member of the Society shall be exempted from annual due for a period of 1 year.
  • 5. An invitation to give a plenary speech at the NSPS Conference.

Supporting Documents

  • 1. Application letter from the applicant outlining the impact of the applicant’s research on the broad field of his/her discipline in Physical Sciences
  • 2. A CV which include refereed published papers (Thomson Reuter Impact Factor of the journal must be included), proceedings, oral contributions, etc
  • 3. List of publication resulted from Ph.D. research work
  • 4. A letter of support from scientist familiar with the research of the applicant (e.g. thesis committee, former supervisor, collaborator)
  • 5. Ph.D. Thesis

Submission: The above documents should be combined into a single PDF (file size <5Mb) and submitted through phdprize@nsps.org.ng with the Subject "Your Surname"-NSPS-Prize 2020. Deadline: May 1st, 2020.

Early Career Researcher Prize

Eligibility Criteria

  • 1. Candidate must not be a member of the Executive Committee or Governing Council of NSPS.
  • 2. Candidate must be a Member of NSPS.
  • 3. The research work must have been carried out in Nigeria.
  • 4. The research work must fall within the Scope of Physical Sciences.
  • 5. The applicant must not be more than 37 years in the case of men and 40 years in the case of women.

Value of the Award

  • 1. Cash
  • 2. A letter from the NSPS President that recognizes the excellence of the achievement
  • 3. A plaque
  • 4. An offer of Regular Membership of the Society provided that the successful Candidate makes an application for membership within three (3) months of receiving notice of his/her Prize. Any successful candidate who is an existing member of the Society shall be exempted from annual due for a period of 1 year.
  • 5. An invitation to give a plenary speech at the NSPS Conference.

    NSPS Prize for Exceptional Achievement in Research

    Eligibility Criteria

    • 1. Candidate must not be a member of the Executive Committee or Governing Council of NSPS
    • 2. The research work must have been carried out in Nigeria.
    • 3. The summary of the research work over the last 4 years explaining major findings, significance and impact in his/discipline in the area Physical Sciences (2 pages maximum)
    • 4. The research work must fall within the Scope of Physical Sciences.

    Value of the Award

    • 1. Cash
    • 2. A letter from the NSPS President that recognizes the excellence of the achievement
    • 3. A plaque
    • 4. An offer Life Membership (LNSPS) of the Society provided that the successful Candidate makes an application for membership within three (3) months of receiving notice of his/her Prize.
    • 5. An invitation to give a plenary speech at the NSPS Conference 2020.

    Supporting Documents

  • 1. Application letter from the applicant outlining the impact of the applicant’s research on the broad field of his/her discipline in Physical Sciences
  • 2. CV which must include refereed published papers (Thomson Reuter Impact Factor of the journal must be included), proceedings, oral contributions, etc.
  • 3. A letter of support from scientists familiar with the research of the applicant (e.g. collaborator, former supervisor, co-supervisor)
