NSPS Best PhD Thesis Prize 2027

Call for Applications

Recognising outstanding doctoral research across the five major areas of the Physical Sciences in Nigeria.

In its quest to promote the study, advancement and research of the Physical Sciences in Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences (NSPS) invites applications for the 4th Edition of the NSPS Best PhD Thesis Prize, 2026/2027 Cycle.

Prize Categories

Five prizes will be awarded to recognise outstanding scholarly achievements in the Physical Sciences:

Note: Selection will be based on the submitted application and participation in the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition.

Eligibility Criteria

1. The candidate must not be a member of the Executive Committee or Governing Council of NSPS.
2. The PhD degree must have been awarded by a Nigerian university, and most of the research work must have been carried out in Nigeria.
3. The award of the degree by the Senate of the university must fall within the eligibility period specified for the 2026/2027 Prize Cycle.
4. The research work must fall within the scope of the Physical Sciences.
5. At least one publication resulting from the candidate's PhD thesis must have been published in a journal indexed in Scopus and/or Web of Science (WoS).
6. Overall, the candidate must have published at least five (5) papers in journals indexed in Scopus and/or Web of Science (WoS).

• Cash Prize
• Award Certificate
• Regular Membership of NSPS (MNSPS) or four years annual dues waiver.
• Article Publication Charge waiver for one article per year in any journal published by NSPS for a period of three years
• Next conference registration fee waiver

Application Procedure

1. Register through the NSPS Prize Portal:
   https://nsps.org.ng/prizes/prize-details.php?year=2027
2. Upload the required documents:
   • Academic profile
   • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
   • List of publications resulting from the PhD research
   • Copy of the PhD thesis
   • PhD certificate or statement of result
3. Applications will be screened against the approved eligibility criteria.
4. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) video.
5. The NSPS PhD Thesis Prize Committee will evaluate eligible submissions and select the best thesis in each of the five areas of the Physical Sciences.
6. Winners will be formally announced and the awards presented at the designated NSPS event.
