The Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences is pleased to celebrate ๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐ข๐๐ฎ ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ก๐ข as our Spotlight Member of the Week.
What happens when a building begins to fail even though it appears properly constructed? How do scientists determine whether groundwater beneath a community is safe and sustainable? And how can the geology of an area influence construction, mining, water supply and environmental protection?
These are the kinds of real-world questions that define the work of Dr. Saidu Abdullahi.
Dr. Abdullahi is a geoscientist with professional experience spanning Engineering Geology, mining and mineral exploration, geotechnical and environmental assessment, field geology and applied geoscience. He currently works in the Department of Geology at the Federal University Gusau, where he also serves as Head of the Laboratory Unit.ย
His academic journey has been marked by steady specialization. He obtained his B.Sc. in Geology in 2012, followed by an M.Sc. in Engineering Geology in 2021 and a Ph.D. in Engineering Geology in 2025. This progression has shaped a research career focused strongly on the interaction between geological conditions, engineering structures and the environment.ย
One of the strongest areas of Dr. Abdullahiโs work is geotechnical and engineering geological investigation.
In one of his recent studies, he contributed to the evaluation of foundation failure in Bauchi metropolis using integrated methods. Research of this kind is important because structural failure is not always caused only by what happens above ground. The properties of the soil, the competence of the underlying materials and the local geological setting can all influence how a foundation performs.ย
His research also extends strongly into groundwater and environmental assessment.
Dr. Abdullahi has contributed to studies on groundwater potential, aquifer continuity, aquifer protective capacity and the hydrochemical quality of surface and groundwater. His work has involved geoelectrical assessment, hydrogeological investigation and the evaluation of water resources in different geological environments across Nigeria.ย
This combination of engineering geology and hydrogeology gives his work direct relevance to some of the challenges faced by growing communities: safe construction, reliable water supply, environmental protection and responsible use of natural resources.
His professional experience has also taken this work beyond academic research.
Dr. Abdullahi participated in environmental assessment activities connected with the Improving Sanitation, Hygiene and Safe Water Supply project in Northwest Nigeria. His responsibilities included assessing Environmental Mitigation Monitoring Plan compliance and remediation activities across parts of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States, as well as heavy-metal monitoring for project facilities.ย
That experience reflects an important strength in his career: the ability to move between research, field investigation and practical environmental problem-solving.
His wider research record demonstrates the same breadth. He has contributed to studies involving structural characterization of Precambrian rocks, groundwater assessment, hydrocarbon reservoir evaluation, hydrogeochemistry, aquifer protection, mine-field water quality and the geological characteristics of different parts of Nigeria.ย
Alongside research and professional practice, Dr. Abdullahi has built substantial teaching experience at the Federal University Gusau. His teaching has covered areas including Introduction to Field Mapping, Geological Field Mapping Techniques, Optical Mineralogy, Petrology and Field Geology, giving him an important role in developing the practical and analytical skills of upcoming geoscientists.ย
His professional strengths extend beyond technical knowledge. He has experience in analysing complex data, evaluating risks and opportunities, preparing technical and developmental proposals, coordinating projects, leading teams and developing strategies for achieving defined objectives.
Dr. Abdullahi is also professionally connected to several scientific and geoscience organisations. His affiliations include the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists, Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment, and Nigerian Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment. Saidu.
Beyond his professional life, he enjoys spending time with his family, travelling, reading, learning, mentoring students and colleagues, and participating in community development and environmental activities.
His personal philosophy is simple but powerful:
โKnowledge is a responsibility; use it to serve humanity, inspire others, and make a positive impact.โ
That philosophy also reflects his long-term vision.
Dr. Abdullahi aspires to become a leading researcher and academic in Engineering and Environmental Geology, with particular emphasis on geotechnical engineering, geological hazards, sustainable construction and environmental challenges. He hopes to build a strong research team, mentor young scientists, strengthen scientific collaboration and develop practical solutions that contribute to sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
What makes his journey particularly compelling is the connection between science and application.
His work asks questions that matter to people: Can this ground safely support a structure? Is this groundwater resource adequately protected? What geological conditions may create engineering risks? How can environmental impacts be monitored and reduced? How can scientific evidence guide safer and more sustainable development?
We celebrate ๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐ข๐๐ฎ ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ก๐ข for his contributions to Engineering Geology, environmental assessment, groundwater research, geotechnical investigation, teaching and professional geoscience.
His journey is a reminder that some of the most important decisions about our buildings, water resources, environment and development begin with understanding the ground beneath us.
