High above the Earth, a constantly changing region of charged particles quietly influences the radio signals, satellite communications, and navigation systems we depend on every day. Understanding what happens in this region, particularly over the equator, is at the heart of Dr. Onoriโs scientific journey.
Dr. Eugene Oghenakpobor Onori is a physicist whose career reflects a strong commitment to research, teaching, mentorship, and the advancement of space and atmospheric science. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Delta State University, Abraka, before obtaining his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Physics from Lagos State University. His Ph.D. specialised in Ionospheric and Radio Propagation Physics. He currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, Lagos State University, Ojo.
His research focuses on ionospheric physics, space weather, radio propagation, solar activity, and the behaviour of the ionospheric F2 layer in equatorial regions. This layer, located hundreds of kilometres above the Earth, plays a vital role in long-distance radio communication, satellite operations, and global navigation systems. Changes in solar and geomagnetic activity can alter its behaviour and affect the reliability of communication and navigation technologies.
Through his work, Dr. Onori investigates how solar activity, geomagnetic storms, atmospheric processes, and other space-weather conditions influence electron density and radio-wave propagation in the ionosphere. His research combines observational data, statistical analysis, satellite measurements, ionosonde observations, and ionospheric models to better understand these variations and improve predictions of ionospheric behaviour.
The importance of this work extends far beyond the laboratory. When the ionosphere changes, communication signals may weaken, navigation accuracy can be affected, and satellite-dependent technologies may experience disruptions. By improving our understanding of these variations, Dr. Onoriโs research contributes to efforts aimed at making communication and navigation systems more reliable, particularly within equatorial regions such as Nigeria and other parts of Africa.
His scholarly work has explored total electron content, F2-layer critical frequencies, electron density, geomagnetic storms, solar-cycle variations, ionospheric modelling, and space-weather effects. His research has appeared in journals including Advances in Space Research, Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Radio Science, Applied Physics, and several other scientific publications.
Dr. Onoriโs scientific interests also demonstrate the valuable connections between space physics and challenges here on Earth. His ongoing work includes research on the relationship between solar activity and rainfall in Lagos, as well as the construction and characterisation of a locally developed pyranometer for measuring solar radiation. These projects reflect a broader interest in applying physics to environmental observation, locally relevant technology, and practical scientific problem-solving.
Beyond publishing research, Dr. Onori has built a long academic career in teaching and student development. He began teaching at Lagos State University as a Graduate Assistant and progressed through the academic ranks to his current position as Associate Professor. Over the years, he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate physics courses and supervised research across different levels of study.
Mentorship is especially important to him. He has already successfully graduated Ph.D. students and hopes to continue training young researchers who can contribute meaningfully to physics and related areas. His career vision reflects a belief that the impact of a scientist should not end with personal achievements, but should also be seen in the people trained, the knowledge transferred, and the next generation prepared to move science forward.
Dr. Onori has also contributed to university administration and academic leadership. His experience includes serving as Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Science, Physics Department SIWES Coordinator, Examination Officer, Course Adviser, Sandwich Programme Coordinator, and member of several university committees. These responsibilities demonstrate a career that combines research and teaching with service to the wider academic community.
His personal motto is:
โBe humble as you climb the ladder up and never look down on people, because life changes in seconds.โ
This philosophy speaks to humility, respect, and the understanding that achievement should never separate a person from the people around them. For Dr. Onori, progress comes with a responsibility to remain grounded and to remember that circumstances can change quickly.
Outside his professional responsibilities, Dr. Onori enjoys reading books, playing table tennis, and listening to cool music. He also values serving in the house of God, participating in community meetings, and attending social gatherings. His CV further reflects his involvement in faith and community organisations, including leadership roles within community and church groups.
Looking ahead, Dr. Onoriโs long-term ambition is to become a leading researcher and Professor in Ionospheric, Space and Radio Propagation Physics. Over the next 10 to 15 years, he hopes to take on higher academic and administrative responsibilities, including serving as Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, or in other senior university leadership positions. Through publishing, mentoring, policy influence, and teaching, he hopes to advance knowledge, solve important scientific problems, and train intelligent undergraduate and postgraduate students who will contribute to the future of physics.
