The Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences is pleased to celebrate 𝐃𝐫. 𝐎𝐲𝐞𝐬𝐨π₯𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐒𝐫𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐀𝐒𝐧𝐬𝐒𝐩𝐨 as our Spotlight Member of the Week.

Dr. Akinsipo’s journey in chemistry is one marked by purpose, innovation, and a strong commitment to sustainable science. Her academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Education in Chemistry and Biology from Tai Solarin College of Education, She later obtained her Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Chemistry from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

She currently serves in the Department of Chemical Sciences, Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State, where she contributes to teaching, research, mentorship, and scientific development. Her work reflects the kind of scholarship that connects chemical science with real-life societal needs, especially in areas where sustainability, health, agriculture, and environmental protection are deeply connected.

Dr. Akinsipo’s research embraces some of the most important areas in modern chemistry. Her work explores green chemistry, nanotechnology, environmental remediation, antimicrobial science, nanobiofertilizers, and phytodrug delivery. Through the biogenic synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles, she investigates how African plants and agricultural waste materials can be transformed into safer, cleaner, and more sustainable solutions for medicine, agriculture, industry, and environmental protection.

One of her remarkable achievements is her work on a nanoemulsified phytodrug system for transdermal diabetes treatment, which has received both Nigerian and United States patent recognition. This achievement reflects the strength of her research vision and shows how African-inspired scientific ideas can produce innovations with global relevance.

Her scholarly record is commendable. Dr. Akinsipo has authored and co-authored close to 40 scholarly publications in reputable journals, including the Journal of the Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences. Her research output reflects consistency, creativity, and a strong commitment to advancing knowledge in green chemistry, nanotechnology, and sustainable innovation.

Beyond her publications, Dr. Akinsipo has contributed to science through green chemistry advocacy, science education, professional engagement, and public outreach. She is also the founder of MoreGreen Plus, an initiative that connects green chemistry, nanotechnology, education, and social impact. In 2024, she led Nigeria’s first virtual green chemistry conference and national inter-university competition, creating space for young scientists to think boldly about sustainability and the future of chemistry in Africa.

One quote that captures her philosophy is:

β€œI believe every problem Africa faces has an African solution waiting in its own soil.”

Away from her professional engagements, Dr. Akinsipo enjoys reading, driving, animal care, and spending quality time with family.

Looking ahead, her vision is to see green chemistry become a natural part of how Nigeria and Africa build, manufacture, and innovate. She hopes to continue turning local resources into safer and more sustainable alternatives while inspiring a new generation of scientists to approach chemistry with responsibility, creativity, and purpose.

The Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences proudly celebrates Dr. Oyesolape Basirat Akinsipo for her inspiring contributions to green chemistry, nanotechnology, sustainable innovation, and science education. Her work reminds us that science becomes more powerful when it solves real problems, protects the environment, and creates opportunities from the resources around us.
